Custom Looking Boxes

I am happy to make custom looking boxes with your own photographs, for an additional $25.00.

Please email Maynard Hale Lyndon for information about ordering Custom Looking Boxes.

Looking Boxes are my layered constructions wherein I juxtapose images from many thousands of photographs I have taken over the years, stretching back to1962. The Looking Box frames are crafted from bamboo. They have a solid back with a single hole, so they can be mounted on a wall or simply displayed on a table or mantle. Every Looking Box is one-of-a-kind and signed. There are no duplicates.

Maynard Hale Lyndon began drawing, painting, and making models in his childhood. Ever since, architecture and industrial design have been at the center of his entrepreneurial and corporate adventures, including the award-winning toy store he founded (Santa Monica,1967), and positions he held as Director of Product Development for Creative Playthings (Princeton); Forms&Surfaces (Santa Barbara); and Design Research (Boston).
Maynard and his wife Lu Wendel Lyndon (ongoing collaborator, visionary, and critic),founded Placewares in 1978, Boston, and their product design firm in 1983. Upon returning to northern California's Sea Ranch, the couple opened their Placewares design store in Gualala in 2005—and added their fine arts gallery with a focus on architecture and design; thus the combined name of Placewares+LyndonDesign.
My passion is assembling moments of observation through my camera, so that each Looking Box is a kind of choreography of memory and impression, color and form, scale and shape, image and idea. I often combine architectural views (with carefully sliced-out voids), details of places, and artifacts in surprising and even serendipitous scenes.
From my thousands of photographs, which I’ve been taking since the 1960s—largely architecture and details—I put into my little Boxes a juxtaposition of places and imagery which in most cases are not found together. So for me, making the Boxes, and for the viewer there can be a sparking of memories of places and people. Discovering a bit of Paris or Venice co-mingled with the rocky shoreline of the Pacific, for instance, sets the mind to thinking and pondering and reflecting.
Now that we have moved to the West Coast, we have re-opened Placewares in the small northern California coastal town of Gualala. Placewares, a name we coined and registered in 1977, is now a part of our Placewares Projects company, with continued close connection to our industrial design firm LyndonDesign.
Our California Placewares store is focused on design + art for the home. Things for entertaining and for play. Things useful and things simple and well designed. Things awe-inspiring because of their design and fabrication. Things made locally and things made far away. Things to be treasured and enjoyed. Things that feel right ‘at home’ on this beautiful coast.
In our internet store, we offer some of the products our customers have enjoyed most, as well as small photos of our store and art gallery. We invite you to come to Gualala (100 miles north of San Francisco, adjacent to The Sea Ranch) and enjoy this lovely part of the world. Stop in our new place, and say hello. We look forward to meeting you or hearing from you!
